About the Italian Gardens

Kensington Gardens is a stunning public park located in the heart of London. It spans over 275 acres and it’s one of the most popular parks in the city.

One of the most alluring features of the park is its Italian Gardens, which were designed in the 1860s and remain a stunning example of Italian garden design.

The Design

The Italian Gardens were designed by Sir James Pennethorne, a prominent English architect who was commissioned by Queen Victoria to redesign the park.

Pennethorne was inspired by the Italian gardens he had seen during his travels, and he sought to create a space that would reflect the beauty and elegance of these gardens.

The Italian Gardens are located on the north side of the park, near the Lancaster Gate entrance. You enter through an impressive wrought-iron gate, which opens onto a stunning terrace overlooking a circular pond.

The pond is adorned with a central fountain, which is surrounded by four smaller fountains that represent the four seasons.

The terrace is flanked by two elegant staircases that lead down to the lower level of the gardens. The lower level features a series of beautifully manicured lawns, ornamental flower beds, and elegant statues.

The gardens are surrounded by a hedge maze, which provides a fun challenge for visitors of all ages.

One of the most striking features is the stunning array of plants and flowers. The gardens are home to a wide variety of Mediterranean plants, including cypress trees, lemon trees, and olive trees. There are also several varieties of roses, as well as colourful annuals and perennials.

Amongst the things to do, is to take a leisurely stroll around the gardens. You can also relax and soak in the stunning views and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. Or even have a picnic with friends.
